Information
Your SmartDrive is a wonderful and flexible piece of technology. Everytime you change a file, whether on your computer or online, it will be automatically backed up and syncronised (your computer and online will always be the same). As well as this, if you access a file such as a word document or excel from a computer that does not have Microsoft Office on it, you will still be able to view and edit the file and of course you can view photos.
The first backup you run will take a fair amount of time, there is no getting around this, and how long it takes will depend on:
- how much data you have to backup (photos, documents, etc)
- the speed of your broadband connection - more information below
Remember as well - even though you may have an 8Mb (Megabit) broadband speed, this is for downloads. Upload speeds will usually only be 500Kb.
After this the backup will be much quicker as only files that are changed will need to be syncronised. This will occur as soon as you save a file.
Bits vs Bytes
Most people are not aware of this, an 8Mb (Megabit) broadband or network connection is not 8MB (Megabyte) of data. Broadband and network speeds look the same but are not - it's about bits and bytes.
1MB (Megabyte) = 8Mb (Megabits)
1KB (Kilobyte) = 8Kb (Kilobits)
Broadband speeds are Mb and data sizes are MB. In other words, an 8Mb broadband connection can only download 1MB of data and a 500 Kb broadband upload speed is only 62.5KB of data.
Tips
If you need to do something that requires more bandwidth such as watching videos or VOIP calls while the first backup is running, no problem.
On a PC
To pause - simply pause the backup by right clicking the SmartDrive icon in the bottom right of your computer screen and click Pause (you will now see a tick next to Pause)
To resume - Do the same thing and it will resume (the tick will be gone)
On a Mac
To pause - simply pause the backup by right clicking the SmartDrive icon in the bottom right of your computer screen and click Pause (you will now see a tick next to Pause)
To resume - Do the same thing and it will resume (the tick will be gone)
The backup will continue from where it was before you paused it.
